Day 7 Zafra to Madrid

Yesterday I decided that it was time for me to go home. I did not accomplish my goal of walking to Salamanca but it is time.

Today I caught a train from Zafra to Madrid and tomorrow I will fly home. This is all my decision and I take full ownership of it.

I have really enjoyed my time here and all of the people that I have met.

Nos vemos Spain.

Day 6 Fuente de Cantos to Zafra

Today was a beautiful walk. About 24k and through a few towns along the way. We walked along a nice dirt farm road and had to cross 2 creeks along the way. Fortunately it had not been raining so they were easy to cross by stepping on stones that were exposed. We were given a warning that if it had been raining that we would need to take the road instead of the path as the creeks would be too high to cross.

It was a relatively easy walk except for the fact that both of my pinky toes have blisters that go completely around them. This is a problem. I am waring the same brand of boots as my last two camino’s Lowa’s and in the same size which is a size larger then I normally ware. On my first camino I had blisters on the bottom of my toes but no big deal. These are very painful. Crazy enough the pain goes away after about 1k and as long as I don’t stop it is ok.

Zafra is a nice town. The albergue is supposed to be donativo but is now 12 euros including breakfast. I cannot recommend this on. about 20 beds only one bathroom/shower. The hospitalero was a good example of someone that I would not like to be. Hopefully he was just having a bad day.

I really enjoyed tonight. A group of us had tapas together. Jessy from France, Marino from Italy, Deb from NZ, Ramon from Spain, and Father and Son Steven and Cristian from Montreal, Canada. So great to be able to sit and talk with so many people from all over the world. Really makes the camino a special place.

Day 5 Monisterio to Fuente de Cantos

Today should have been a very easy walk. Only 22k much of it down hill.

After such a challenging day yesterday and sleeping pretty bad last night today was a little rough.

I have been accused of snoring but have never woken myself up snoring so…. Last night we had a world champion snorer in our room. To make things worse his bed was next to mine. I have never in my life heard some of the sounds that came out of that man. Put that together with my body being very tense after a long walk and the result was not so good.

The landscape today was very nice. Green rolling hills with cows, sheep, goats and of course the Pata Negra or black hooved pig. This area as are most of the areas that we walk through is mostly farming. There are fields of grain as far as the eye can see.

The town of Fuente de Cantos is interesting. We are in a private albergue which is like a palace. You walk in the front door and into a large marble entryway. My room is just off the entry way and opens on to one of three gardens. The first has tables for sitting and a fountain. The second has a swimming pool and the third is a courtyard for a future restaurant. Upstairs there is a terrace, area with washing machines a kitchen, living room and some private sleeping rooms that pilgrims can rent. All and all very nice. The funny part is that there is no restaurant in the town center. NOT one. You have to walk back out to the main road, which as a pilgrim just made us cranky. But we had a good meal and it was very inexpensive. The works for 8 euros.

Tomorrow the forcast calls for rain. I am hoping that they are wrong but we will see. I am prepared so bring it on if necessary.

Cheers for now
