My Adventures Walking the Camino de Santiago

March 5 2018 Day 16

Today we decided at the urging or our hospitalera, Mercedes to take the bus to Zamora. I’ll admit it was not that hard to convince me, so off we went on the bus from El Cubo de Vino to Zamora.

Zamora is a beautiful walled city that sits right next to the Dauro river. There is a beautiful Roman bridge that leads pilgrims across the river and up to the albergue. Needless to say we did not cross the bridge but the Albergue is above the bridge overlooking the river. We made our way from the bus station on the other end of town along avienda tres croses to the plaza mayor where fortunately we were greeted by our two hospitaleros Javier and Rafael. They walked us to the albergue and got us all checked in. The Albergue is amazing 3 levels, the top is the entrance with sleeping quarters for the hospitaleros an office and an awesome terrace overlooking the river. The next level down is they sleeping quarters for pilgrims with heated floors and the bottom floor is the dining room, living room, kitchen. The albergue is donativo. They cooked us dinner and breakfast. It was awesome.

Once we were all checked in we went out to see the town and find some lunch. We shockingly, found our way to a wine store where I bought some wine for dinner and Ed bought some meat and cheese. I asked to owner for a recommendation for a place to eat Leschazo which is roasted baby lamb, a local specialty. He said just one minute, picked up his phone and called a restaurant to get us in. It was awesome.

Tomorrow we walk to Montamarta.

March 3 2018 Days 14 and 15

Yesterday I had a nice rest day in Salamanca and played tourist. My camino friend Ed Tweedy and I visited more museums than I normally do in a year and toured the old and new Cathedral of Salamanca. To top it all off we had two great meals. The best being dinner at a little wine bar called Vinodiario which funny enough my wife Beth and I had been referred to in 2013. We really enjoyed it then and it was just as good last night.

Today Ed and I walked from Salamanca to El Cubo del Vino. A walk of about 35k or roughly 21 miles. It was a long day. With all of the rain and snow that we have been experiencing the trail is pure mud. Not easy mud but clay mud that sticks to your boots to add additional weight and make the journey just that much more of a challenge. Once we realized that between the flooded streams and the mud it was better to take the road. So today we walked almost 21 miles on the main road in the driving rain. It was a bit of a demoralizing day. I am hoping that tomorrow I feel better and more inspired.

All of that being said. The albergue in El Cubo del Vino is awesome. It is simple but the hospitalero Mercedes is awesome. We have a room with two single beds. It is only 4 € to was and dry our clothes, and after all of the rain and mud today that is a task. The restaurant in town El Chorro made us an excellent menú for 10€ and we have beds with sheets and blankets with a heater. Oh, and most importantly the shower was really hot!!

Tomorrow there will be more rain. We will head for Zamora. Cheers for now.

March 1, 2018 Days 13 & 14

It has been a very cold few days. Not much time to write as the days have been long.

I am in Salamanca today. A beautiful city with tons of history. There is a beautiful cathedral, actually, two as the old and new are connected. There are museums and the very first Jesuit university was formed here. Needless to say I will be taking in the sites.

Saturday I will walk out of Salamanca to continue my Camino to Santiago.
